| A Prison of Shame, and It’s Ours Thursday, May 08, 2008 Author: Nicholas Kristof Source: NY Times
My Times colleague Barry Bearak was imprisoned by the brutal regime in Zimbabwe last month. Barry was not beaten, but he was infected with scabies while in a bug-infested jail. He was finally brought before a court after four nights in jail and then released. Alas, we don't treat our own inmates in Guantánamo with even that much respect for law. On Thursday, America released Sami al-Hajj, a cameraman for Al Jazeera who had been held without charges for more than six years. ... Read more
| Tallahassee tally: Legislature bad, tax commission worse Thursday, May 08, 2008 Author: Michael Mayo Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel
Hard to say who performed worse in Tallahassee this spring, the Legislature or the Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission. My vote goes to the tax commission. After all, the Legislature gets to unveil its special brand of dunderheaded magic every year. The just-concluded session was especially uninspiring, with legislators doing little besides cutting billions from a budget wrecked by sales-tax shortfalls. ... Read more
| The All-White Elephant in the Room Thursday, May 08, 2008 Author: Frank Rich Source: NY Times
Bored by those endless replays of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright? If so, go directly to YouTube, search for "John Hagee Roman Church Hitler," and be recharged by a fresh jolt of clerical jive. What you'll find is a white televangelist, the Rev. John Hagee, lecturing in front of an enormous diorama. Wielding a pointer, he pokes at the image of a woman with Pamela Anderson-sized breasts, her hand raising a golden chalice. The woman is "the Great Whore," Mr. Hagee explains, and she is drinking "the blood of the Jewish people." ... Read more
| The Risk Economy Thursday, May 08, 2008 Author: James Kunstler Source: TypePad.com (blog)
..the world is awash with bad investment paper. The standard of living in the US can't be supported on debt anymore. The people of the US don't produce enough real value to service their debts. Institutions can no longer be supported on debt gone bad. Something's got to give -- meaning something has to bring the US standard of living down to a level consistent with our declining actual wealth. ... Read more
| Michigan Uses Marriage Amendment to Ban Benefits Thursday, May 08, 2008 Author: Florida Red and Blue Source: Florida Red and Blue
Just hours ago, the Supreme Court of Michigan ruled that that state's amendment banning ‘gay marriage' also prohibits offering benefits to unmarried employees. This is the exact scenario we've been talking about from the start - Amendment 2 could be used to strip existing benefits from Floridians. When we've talked about what Amendment 2 can do, the sponsors have been quick to deny it. In fact, right now, their website says: "our amendment will not invalidate benefits granted from domestic partnerships or any other source." Sure. Tell us another one. ... Read more
| Missing Records Thursday, May 08, 2008 Author: Editorial Source: NY Times
Senator John McCain is 71 years old, a survivor of an aggressive form of skin cancer. If elected, he would be the oldest man to become president. These factors are not disqualifying, but they impose on Mr. McCain a larger duty than usual to provide detailed, timely disclosure about his health. So far, he has failed to meet this obligation to voters, even though he is now the presumed Republican nominee. ... Read more
| The Bomb Squads: How To Survive A Gaza Refugee Camp Thursday, May 08, 2008 Author: Ramzy Baroud Source: CounterCurrents.org
We waited breathless. Breathing heavily was hazardous under these somewhat exceptional circumstances. The army, my father often advised, was sensitive to the slightest movements or sounds, including a whisper, a cough, or God forbid, a sneeze. Thus we sat completely still. Muneer, my younger brother was entrusted with the mission of peering through the rusty holes in the front door. ... Read more
| For Democrats, Instincts Differ on Economics Thursday, May 08, 2008 Author: David Leonhardt Source: NY Times
As they traveled across Indiana and North Carolina over the last few days, trading charges and countercharges about the wisdom of suspending the federal gas tax for the summer, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama were really having a larger fight. They were arguing over who had better economic instincts. For all the similarities between the two Democrats, there is also a core thematic difference between them. ... Read more
| The Rev. Wright Thursday, May 08, 2008 Author: Charley Reese Source: LewRockwell.com
The Rev. Wright is what people in the Old South used to call an "uppity (N-word)." He does not lower his eyes, bow and scrape, eat crow or humble pie, or apologize. If you insult him, he'll insult you back. I like the guy a whole lot. I disagree with him on some points, but I've come to like and admire him. He makes a better speech than most candidates, and certainly a better and more intelligent one than the so-called pundits. ... Read more
| ’88 Campaign Offers a Lesson in Using Symbols as Bludgeons Thursday, May 08, 2008 Author: Robin Toner Source: NY Times
Sometimes, as Senator Barack Obama seemed to argue earlier this year, a flag pin is just a flag pin. But it can never be that simple for anyone with direct experience of the 1988 presidential campaign. That year, the Republicans used the symbols of nationhood (notably, whether schoolchildren should be required to recite the Pledge of Allegiance) to bludgeon the Democrats, challenge their patriotism and utterly redefine their nominee, Gov. Michael S. Dukakis of Massachusetts. ... Read more
